Basically, body farms take dead people and let them rot in different situations, to study how the body decomposes. they use this info for things like crime scene investigations, so judge how long a person has been dead, etc.

According to Wikipedia, which i know is not always the best source but i jsut wanted a quick reference: A body farm is a research facility where human decomposition after death can be scientifically studied in a variety of settings. The aim is to gain a better understanding of the decomposition process, permitting the development of techniques for extracting information (such as the timing and circumstances of death) from human remains. At any one time there will be a number of bodies placed in different settings throughout the facility and left to decompose. The bodies are exposed in a number of ways in order to provide insights into decomposition under varying conditions: for example, some are left out in the open or in the woods, some get buried in shallow graves or entombed in vaults, some have been left in car trunks or submerged in water. Detailed observations and records of the decomposition process are kept, including the sequence and speed of decomposition and the effects of insect activity, and afterwards the skeletonized bones are removed from the plot and added to the Dr. William M. Bass Donated Skeletal Collection, to be used for research and teaching. Bodies are obtained from various sources. Some have lain unclaimed at the medical examiner's office, while over 300 people have voluntarily donated their bodies to the Body Farm. Appx. 120 bodies are donated to the facility every year

A girl in my class visited one, and she said they had bodies tied up hanging from trees and shut up in cars and left in ponds and all sorts of stuff. They just take dead people who donated their bodies to science and chuck them out there to rot.

What do you think?

Is this sick and twisted, or a necessary evil?

I actually can't make a decision about this one. Im seriously grossed out by the concept but I kinda figure like hey, You donate your body to be left to rot then thats you're own fault. Have fun with that shit. I'd never do it personally. I guess it's KINDA necessary... But their could possibly be better ways to do studys like this to... Creepy!

haven't you watch CSI? it's so they can look at a body that's been rotting and tell what's been happening to it and how long it's been there. Necessary evil? sure. And besides, those people that donated their bodies to science don't really get a say.

I definitely said that in the second sentence of my post.

I really don't consider it evil at all, if someone has made the educated choice to donate their body to science, then, they should know that what they are doing is exactly that.
Body farms = scientific study sights.
